Liberty Garden
LIBERTY PARK
Client: City of Bakersfield
This project is a memorial garden and monument to the memory of the September 11 victims and the public servants who gave their lives to save others.
Copley Design Collaborative (as Prime Consultant) was responsible for all the construction documents including walls, seatwalls, monument design, lighting, enhanced paving, planting, and irrigation.
The monument is a four-sided, white marble monolith centered in an elevated plaza. The monument hosts four plaques, one on each face of the structure. The four commemorative plaques honor the lives of the firemen, the policemen, the emergency medical technicians, and the volunteers and victims who lost their lives on September 11 as a result of the terrorist activities that day. The monument acts as a spring which pours from each of the four corners into a marble basin in the center of the plaza.
The white marble symbolizes a purity of heart and the courageous character exemplified by those who selflessly risked their lives to rescue the victims of September 11.
The water streaming from the corners represents the tears shed globally for the victims and volunteers who died that day. Yet out of the pool springs a renewal of patriotism, national pride and a celebration of the liberty Americans share in common.
